Even in ancient times, the great stone megaliths of Bongani formed a meeting place. The ochre paintings of bushmen are still found on the rock walls as testament to their presence and the bush still stirs and parts in deference to the regal passage of lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and zebra.

Millions of years ago the angry bowels of the earth forced apart rock and mountain, disgorging from its cauldron a great searing substance that hardened into megalithic forms. Over time, wind and weather stripped away the sands to reveal the stone giants of Bongani.
With the 8000 hectares of Mthetomusha Game Reserve sprawling below, the thatch spires of Bongani Mountain Lodge nudge the towering sky above the ancient rocks.
Bongani is a pioneering project of tradtitional landowning communities affiliating with conservation bodies. Adjacent to the Kruger National Park, the local community made its land available in forging a partnership. The local Mpakeni community welcomes guests with their own theatre performance. They depict the history, aspirations and concerns of the people who have, over centuries, called the Lebombo Mountains home.
